COVID-19 - Bins and recycling

Garden waste collections suspended
Due to the ongoing national shortage of HGV drivers, we have had to take the difficult decision to temporarily suspend garden waste collections due from the week of Monday 4 October. This is to target our driver resources to protecting our core household waste and recycling collection services.
In response to the national shortage, our contractor Serco has made every effort to recruit drivers in a competitive market by offering increased salaries and enhanced benefits packages. Some applicants are currently going through the recruitment and training process.
However, a number of driver vacancies are not yet filled and agencies, who are also affected by this shortage in a fast-moving market, are unable to provide staff to fill gaps.
The national shortage of HGV drivers has impacted many other businesses and services. Together with the risk of crews becoming infected with COVID-19, this has made our current staffing levels unpredictable.
Therefore, we will review the situation regularly and hope that, if the HGV driver availability improves, we will be able to resume the service in November.
The missed collections will be added to customers’ accounts. To ensure that subscription records remain on the system to add this extension, it is important that customers renew their subscription quickly if they get a reminder.
Crews are still working to clear the backlog of streets with missed collections due in the week of Monday 6 September, with the aim of providing all customers with a collection.
If they are unable to complete these collections, updates will be given on our website and social media channels. Missed collections during this time will also be added to customer accounts.
If just your bin, rather than the whole street, is missed during these catch up collections, we will not be able to return to collect it. However, you should report it to us within 48 hours of the crew making collections in your road to enable us to process an extension for your account.
Collections due from 20 September onwards will not be taking place.
We understand that this will be frustrating and inconvenient for our customers and apologise for the inconvenience caused.
General collections update
Crews are currently working hard to complete as many rounds as possible but owing to staffing issues around COVID, shortage of HGV drivers and sickness, some collections may not take place.
If this happens, any outstanding work will be completed first, so if your collection is scheduled for today it may be collected later than usual. In some areas, glass may be collected separately to allow the recycling crews to complete as many rounds as possible. Please continue to leave your bins or boxes out until they are collected.
If only your bin, rather than the whole street, has been missed, please complete a missed bin form.
Garden waste collections
Visit our garden waste webpage for further information on the service.
Collections running as normal.
If you currently receive an assisted bin collection from us, we will continue to provide you with this service. Letters are being sent out to all customers who have assisted collections.
We are experiencing delays with our container deliveries due to high demand and staff shortages. Please allow up to 40 working days. Serco have employed an external delivery company to assist until staffing levels have improved and are working hard to deliver containers as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Recycling bring sites
The bring sites are all open with the exception of Morrisons.
Many textile and clothing banks are currently closed. Please do not leave bags around these banks.
