Have your say

Your participation makes a difference

At Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council we are committed to understanding the views of local residents, partner organisations, businesses and visitors to the borough to help us improve the services we provide. It's important that you have your say about the services you use and the policies that affect you, and being involved in a consultation is just one of the ways you can do this.

Consultation is a process of dialogue in which the council engages with people to find out their views, with the objective of influencing a decision, policy or programme of action.

Decision-making is normally carried out by borough councillors; they consider: results from consultations (where relevant), legislation and guidance, the needs of different groups and the amount of council budget available.

The council’s consultation principles are based on best practice and aim to:

  • inform and involve local people in consultations and activities at an early stage and provide enough time for people to give their views
  • make it clear what the consultation is about and why we are seeking views
  • make consultation and participation accessible to all by providing adequate information, monitoring profile of respondents and using a range of methods
  • work in a joined up way with partners to raise awareness of consultations and improve results
  • provide accurate and timely feedback on consultation results and decisions taken - publish outcomes
  • monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of consultations to ensure continuous improvement.

A range of consultation methods are used to gather people’s views, including surveys, focus groups and public events. Examples of regular consultations include; the Council Plan and Residents' Survey.

Our Planning, Community Development and Licencing teams also carry out frequent consultations.
