“A tremendous honour” is how Basingstoke and Deane’s new Mayor Cllr Onnalee Cubitt views her forthcoming year in office.

Cllr Cubitt, who represents Basing and Upton Grey ward, was made Mayor last night (Thursday 27 May) at the annual Council meeting held at The Haymarket, owing to COVID restrictions on the number able to fit in the Council Chamber.

Cllr Ken Rhatigan was re-elected as Leader for a four-year term and announced a Cabinet ‘reshuffle’ at the annual Council meeting last night (Thursday 27 May).

First elected as Leader in May 2019, Cllr Rhatigan was reappointed at the meeting of all councillors, held at The Haymarket owing to COVID-19 restrictions. This followed Cllr Rhatigan’s group winning a majority of 33 seats of the 54 on the council in the elections on Thursday 6 May.

The popular children’s play area will be replaced, in the same location as present, but with separate spaces for toddlers and juniors to enjoy new equipment, such as climbing equipment, swings and roundabouts.

The Choice Based Lettings bidding system for social rented homes has been re-launched with more user-friendly features and is now optimised for use on smart phones and tablets. The council-run application process now gives a clear overview of the current Homebid bidding cycle and shows when the next one starts.

As part of our climate emergency response, we have replaced two of our fossil fuel powered vehicles with two electric vehicles, which are cheaper to run and better for the environment with zero emissions.

The new EVs follow our decision last year to improve the town centre car parks with an electric charging hub, the first of its kind in Hampshire.

Households in the borough will be contacted this week by the council’s Electoral Registration Officer as part of the annual electoral registration canvass. Each year the council is required by law to contact households to confirm the names of residents are correct on the electoral register or update them.

Normally this is through a letter that must be responded to by everyone, even if the information is correct. But changes brought in this year mean that responding to the canvass is easier and quicker, in fact over 60% of the borough’s households will not be required to respond. During August households will be contacted by email or post.

More than 65% of households (over 50,000), have provided responses to the council's Electoral Registration Officer as part of the annual electoral registration canvass. Over 60% of these responses have been online, over the phone or by text.

The borough’s sporting stars are being invited to apply for sports funding through the Sports Grant Aid scheme funded by the council, and administered by Basingstoke Sports Council. A plan to protect and enhance an area of outstanding natural beauty that covers nearly one third of the borough’s countryside has been approved by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. At a meeting on Tuesday 10 September, Cabinet agreed the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Management Plan, which sets out its vision for the next five years and replaces the previous management plan that expires this year.

New business-class hotel takes shape

Construction of a new business-class hotel in Basingstoke’s central business district is expected to complete in January. Since October, contractor Willmott Dixon has been working to build the new 153-bedroom hotel, with leisure club, co-working space, restaurant, bar and a coffee shop which is due to be completed by the end of January 2020.

The drop-in sessions were held by two summer youth groups at the Ridgeway Centre in Buckskin and Bishops Green Village Hall as part of very early work planning for the 250-acre park as part of the Manydown development in Basingstoke.

Together with our contractor Serco we are making some changes to waste, recycling and garden waste collections in the borough.

From the week beginning Monday 22 July 2019, over half of the borough’s households will see a change to the day, recycling week or the time their bin is collected. Most of our garden waste customers will also see a change.

These changes are necessary to ensure the smooth running of the service both now and in the future. They will reduce the distances bin trucks are travelling, revise the routes to incorporate new homes in the area and simplify collections for some residents so their glass and recycling is collected on the same day.
