Home composting is a great way to get an endless supply of soil improver for your garden. It also helps to reduce the amount of waste we send for incineration.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is offering residents the opportunity to buy a cut-price Green Cone food waste digester or Green Johanna 'hot composter'.
Every year, Basingstoke and Deane residents throw away over 8,000 tonnes of food, most of which is unused. However some food waste, such as meat carcass, bones and plate scrapings will never be on the menu, so instead of putting this rubbish in your bin, you can now use a Green Cone or a Green Johanna!
Recycle for Hampshire has teamed up with getcomposting.com to provide compost bins at special offer prices and other great green products for residents of Basingstoke and Deane.
Composting at home cuts CO2 emissions and turns most kitchen and garden waste into a free supply of compost that will keep your garden blooming year after year.

What is a Green Cone?
The Green Cone is a food waste digester which has its base buried in the soil which is where all the work takes place to ‘digest’ the food waste using heat and harmless bacteria, breaking it down to its natural components of carbon and water. It’s a natural process that relies on the heat from the sun, so the Green Cone needs to be placed in a sunny spot in your garden.
To find out more about how the Green Cone works, please see the document at the bottom of the page, but please note:
- if you purchase a Green Cone, you will need to dig a hole approximately 600mm in diameter and 450mm deep to accommodate the in-ground food waste digestion chamber.
- The council is not able to remove any excess soil. However, you can be dispose of this at the Household Waste Recycling Centre, Wade Road Basingstoke.
- The Green Cone needs to be installed in a sunny spot in your garden and in soil that drains well. Visit Great Green Systems website for further information on installation.
What is a Green Johanna?
The Green Johanna is a 'hot composter' that digests both green garden waste and food wastes. It is designed to sit in a shady position in your garden on top of the ground like a home composting bin. The Green Johanna's unique ventilation system enables the contents to reach much higher temperatures than traditional garden compost bins, breaking down waste faster. The Green Johanna takes all cooked and uncooked food waste, making a rich compost from household kitchen waste mixed together with organic garden material.
