Evolving leisure park proposals

Work is moving forward on the masterplan for a £350 million transformation of Basingstoke Leisure Park before more community consultation.

What does the regeneration involve?

Developer NewRiver is drawing up proposals for the redevelopment of the leisure park, creating new activities and experiences and doubling the size of the existing leisure facilities.

There would also be a designer outlet village, creating an exciting new leisure destination.

Over 1,500 visitors came to a three-day community event in October 2018 showing early stage ideas and gathering views on what people would like to see in a reimagined leisure park of the future. For more information on the drop-in sessions see https://futurebasingstokeleisurepark.info/

The sessions showed residents’ support for having a range of exciting leisure experiences right on their doorstep.

The next phase of community engagement later this year will present more detailed proposals for the redevelopment of the park.

This will transform the leisure park, creating 500,000 sq ft of new leisure activities and experiences. Doubling of the size of the existing leisure facilities, the greatly expanded park will operate along side a 200,00 sq ft designer outlet village, creating an exciting new leisure destination.

A replacement for the council’s Aquadrome will be part of the plans. And all those involved, including current operator Planet Ice, the council and NewRiver, are exploring the options for the future of the ice rink on the leisure park.

What stage has the project reached?

Extensive work is needed on a planning application for the site, including detailed studies and wider technical work.

Discussions are progressing with existing operators about future plans and NewRiver will start working with potential occupiers to bring new attractions to Basingstoke. Early concepts draw inspiration from leading global leisure destinations which provide innovative leisure experiences for families, high adrenaline pursuits and state of the art virtual reality e-sports.

Why was this decided as a way forward for the park?

The current leisure park is getting to the point of needing redevelopment. Through this project we can continue to give our residents access to ‘best in class’ leisure facilities in the future.

This is an innovative way of delivering a comprehensive renewal of the leisure park without putting the burden on taxpayers to fund it or depending on all operators at the park investing millions in upgrading their facilities on a piecemeal basis.

The development would bring significant benefits to the borough in terms of the increased rents and business rates, new jobs, a boost for the local construction industry and attract new income into the local economy.

A development of this scale is a highly complex project that would be delivered in carefully planned phases.
