Brownfield Land Register

In April 2017, the Government introduced a requirement for Local Planning Authorities to publish a Brownfield Land Register and update it annually. The most recent version of the register was published in December 2019. The register provides information on previously developed (brownfield) sites which offer potential for housing development that meet certain criteria. The register comprises a set of standard information prescribed by Government.

Brownfield Land Registers can consist of a Part 1 and a Part 2. Councils have the power to grant brownfield sites Permission in Principle, as a new stepping stone towards planning permission, by including them in Part 2 of the Register. However the council doesn’t intend to grant Permission in Principle for any of the sites at this stage.

Criteria for inclusion on the Register

The Brownfield Land Register provides information on all known brownfield sites in the borough which are 0.25 hectares or larger, are available for development and are suitable for housing. The Register contains sites identified in the Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA), sites with planning permission and sites pending planning decisions.

How to submit a site for consideration

To submit a site for potential inclusion on the register, you will need to provide a plan of the site clearly showing its boundaries and other relevant site information including ownership and current planning status. These details should be sent to the email address below using the form at the bottom of the page. Also, please contact us if you have any updates on sites included in the register.

The Register will be updated as a minimum on an annual basis. The most recent version was published in December 2020.
