COVID-19 guidance for shopping

Last updated: 16 July 2021 at 12.50pm

The latest guidance for staying safe when shopping during the pandemic is set out below.

Shopping safely

As part of the government’s COVID-19 roadmap, on Monday 19 July 2021 the country will move into Step 4 with most legal restrictions to control the spread of the virus lifted. There will be no restrictions on non-essential retail or indoor and outdoor hospitality which can reopen with any capacity limits lifted.

As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, it is important to keep safe and use personal judgement to manage your own risk.

After coming into contact with surfaces touched by many others such as handles and handrails, it is particularly important to wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day.

Face coverings

In England, the requirement to wear a face covering by law will be lifted on Monday 19 July 2021 however it is still recommended that face coverings are worn in crowded areas such as on public transport.

For more information on staying safe while shopping in the town centre, visit Festival Place and The Malls Shopping Centre.

Travelling into town

If you are using a council-owned car park in the town centre please consider paying by card or using the free RingGo app which is available to download from the App Store and Google Play.

There are also other ways to get to the town centre, including walking, cycling and public transport. If you use the bus, please follow the recommended guidance around wearing a face covering on public transport and in crowded places.
