Family fun fit for a Queen to celebrate the platinum jubilee

News release 10173, published on 24 May 2022
Basingstoke and Deane residents will have the opportunity to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style at a range of events taking place across the borough.

From street parties and arts and crafts to a jubilee pudding competition, there are events for all the family on offer in the lead up to and during the four-day weekend.

Festivities kick off at the end of May during the half term week with the official opening of the War Memorial Skate Park on Saturday 28 May. The fun starts at 12 noon, with skaters of all ages and abilities welcome.

The Love Basingstoke team will be offering free family fun at the Top of the Town from Monday 30 May to Wednesday 1 June 2022 with activities including balloon making with Becky Kitter, upcycled bunting with Junk Jodie, royal themed arts and crafts with Rachel Davis and the return of The Brick People.

For creative communities there will be an opportunity to get involved in creating The Queen’s Sheep, with the flock displayed at the Mayor’s jubilee picnic alongside a new children’s story for Basingstoke commissioned by the council and written by local storyteller Josh Dixon bringing The Queen’s Sheep to life.

And for foodies, there is a chance to help the Mayor choose the perfect pud in the Platinum Jubilee Pudding Competition. The puddings, created by students at Basingstoke College of Technology, will be sampled at an afternoon tea with the Mayor at a special event on Thursday 26 May 2022 at 3pm with the winning pudding served at the Mayor’s Jubilee Civic Sunday Service on Sunday 5 June 2022 at St Michael’s Church.

Celebrations will culminate with the Mayor Cllr Paul Miller inviting the borough to join him at The Big Platinum Jubilee Picnic in War Memorial Park on Sunday 5 June from 11am to 3pm with free activities and entertainment provided by local community groups and cultural organisations. Residents will need to provide their own picnic.

Leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cllr Simon Bound said: “ The council has granted permission for over 40 Jubilee community events to take place on its land.  It is brilliant to see the range of events and activities planned across the borough to mark this important and historic landmark in our country’s history. I am really looking forward to seeing our communities celebrate together.”
