Council helps people celebrate VE Day 80 with a street party
Basingstoke and Deane residents wanting to hold street parties celebrating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day next month are being supported by the council.
Also known as VE Day, the event on 8 May each year marks the end of World War II in Europe when the Allies accepted Germany’s surrender in 1945.
To help people get their street party plans under way, the council is asking organisers to fill in a short form to apply for the permissions needed, including to close their road, and get advice as soon as possible.
Applications for VE Day 80 street parties are free and the council is not charging a fee for the road closures.
Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Dan Putty, said: “Enjoying a street party this VE Day is a great way to deepen your relationships with friends and neighbours as you come together to celebrate 80 years since the end of World War II in Europe.
“VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for freedom but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since.
“We encourage everyone to take part, whether that’s coming to the special flag-raising ceremony at the Civic Offices on the morning of VE Day itself or gathering with friends and family on nearby days in streets, gardens, town halls, clubs and pubs. Let this be a day of joy, reflection, and celebration.”
