Discover the borough’s wild side at next weekend's BioBlitz

News release 10650, published on 24 Jul 2025

Nature lovers of all ages are invited to discover the borough’s wild side at next weekend's BioBlitz, a three-day celebration of local wildlife at Mill Field Nature Reserve in Old Basing from Friday 1 August to Sunday 3 August.

Hosted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Natural Basingstoke, the BioBlitz invites people to get hands-on with expert ecologists and wildlife groups to learn about and explore the borough’s rich biodiversity.

Bat hunting at dusk, an early morning birdsong walk, reptile rambles and butterfly spotting are just some of the free, family-friendly activities that have been designed to educate and inspire.

Participants will learn from the best, with sessions led by the council's rangers, conservation volunteers and organisations like the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

The events will be focused on plants and animals and help to build an important snapshot of how well native species are doing.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate and Ecological Emergency Cllr Chris Tomblin said: “The Mill Field BioBlitz is a great chance for people of all ages to connect with nature and support vital conservation work by our local wildlife champions.

“Whether you're a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or just curious about the natural world, there’s something for everyone. Take a look at what’s going on, come along over the weekend and discover more about the species that call this part of Hampshire home.”

Chair of Natural Basingstoke Gill Smallman said: “BioBlitz is a great chance to explore local wildlife and see what our dedicated nature volunteers do. Come along, get involved and you might even be inspired to join us in protecting our borough's wonderful natural spaces.”

The BioBlitz is being organised to help more people to connect with nature, a key goal of the biodiversity strategy the council adopted in March last year.
