Putting safety first this Halloween and bonfire season

News release 10676, published on 27 Oct 2025
People enjoying Halloween and Bonfire Night are being urged to think of others by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council as part of a campaign to help residents feel safer as the evenings get darker.

The Autumn Nights campaign, run by the council’s community safety patrol officers,  involves the team working with communities to provide advice on personal safety, responsible trick or treating and being respectful to those who may not wish to take part.

The council’s officers will be out patrolling in the borough in the run up to and on both Halloween and bonfire night and will also be visiting shops to offer advice about the responsible sale of items such as fireworks. They will also be visiting sites where illegal bonfires have been held previously and liaising with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Residents are also asked to be considerate of vulnerable neighbours as well as animals and wildlife if lighting fireworks at home.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Partnerships and Inclusion Cllr John McKay said: “Autumn events like Halloween and bonfire night can be great fun, but we know they’re not enjoyable for everyone. For some, they can be unsettling or even distressing.

“We’re asking everyone to celebrate responsibly and be mindful of others, especially vulnerable residents, those living with conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and pet owners who may find this time of year particularly challenging.

“We also want to make sure young people stay safe while out trick-or-treating. Our community safety patrol team will be out on the streets, offering advice and support to help everyone enjoy a safe and respectful autumn.
