Repair work in final phase as part of major investment in Basingstoke’s flagship cultural buildings
Essential repair work is almost complete at two of the borough’s popular cultural venues ahead of the busy Christmas period, as part of the council’s commitment to arts and culture.
Repair work started in June this year, with £1.5 million being invested in The Anvil and The Haymarket in Basingstoke town centre to protect the much-loved venues for the future.
Funded by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, this has included major work on the roofs, windows and guttering, alongside other work to weatherproof the buildings and preserve their character.
Scaffolding to allow the work to take place at The Anvil is currently being removed in time for the venue’s busy Christmas period and work on The Haymarket is expected to finish shortly.
Further work to the roof at The Anvil is expected to take place between January and March 2026 and, subject to planning approvals, work will include installing additional decorative lighting outside the building to enhance the arrival experience.
Co-Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Property Cllr Gavin James said: “The Anvil and The Haymarket are jewels in our borough’s cultural crown and offer world-class performances for residents and visitors from far and wide.
“This important investment was essential to protect these vital venues for the future to make sure they remain at the heart of our thriving town centre and continue to play an important role in our diverse local arts and culture offer.”
