Call for clues over tree poisoning

News release 8306, published on 31 Aug 2018
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is appealing for information after a decades-old tree was found to be poisoned.

The Sycamore tree, which has stood in the open space by Bessemer Road in Basingstoke for up to 80 years, had holes drilled into it and an unknown noxious substance applied.

Police have been informed and the tree fenced off, while council officers monitor the condition of the tree.

Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services and the Environment Cllr Hayley Eachus said: “This action constitutes a criminal offence and I would urge anyone with any information regarding this matter to contact either the police on 101, or our community services team on 01256 844844 or communityservices@basingstoke.gov.uk.”
