Council opens its doors to support home ownership
More than 300 people came along to the free information event, hosted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with Help to Buy South, at the Civic Offices on Tuesday 4 September.
Visitors received advice about the Government’s Help to Buy and Shared Ownership schemes, as well as other schemes, affordability, eligibility and how to apply.
Taking part were representatives from the National Housing Federation, Sovereign and Vivid housing associations, six independent financial advisors, a solicitor, a building society and an estate agent.
The advisors were kept busy with enquiries from visitors who ranged in age and personal circumstances and were delighted to receive the latest useful advice to enable them to get on the housing market.
The Help to Buy events in Basingstoke have become so successful and popular they are now being run twice a year.
The council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet member responsible for Housing Cllr Terri Reid said: “Helping those people who are keen to get on the housing ladder is a priority for the council and I am pleased so many people took the opportunity to come along. This free event gives people the opportunity to access all of the relevant organisations to get on or move up the housing ladder under one roof.
“From the feedback received it was clear that people really valued the free financial advice and the opportunity to find out about the current properties available and I’m hopeful that today’s event will lead to a number of people getting themselves on or moving up the housing ladder.”
One visiting family commented: “We found out lots of new and useful information and the event was really helpful. The fact that we were able to get free advice meant that we were more aware of what we needed to do next and now know the right questions to ask.”
