New account to help residents manage their council payments online

News release 8362, published on 01 Aug 2019
Residents can now cut down on their paperwork and manage their council tax account and benefit claims online at a touch of a button.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has introduced a new 'self-service' area of the website where residents can log in to view their accounts and update their information from their smartphone, tablet or computer.

Those signing up can choose to get paperless bills, view upcoming payments, change the way they pay, adjust their billing date and upload files to support council tax and benefit claims at a time that suits them.

Residents will also be able to see the information for their account, check instalments, review bills issued and let the council know if they have problems paying, as well as finding out how to claim housing benefit and council tax support.

And it’s not just residents who will benefit from the new online service, as businesses and landlords will also be able to view business rates instalments and benefit payments.

Cabinet Member for Finance and Service Improvement Cllr Hannah Golding said: “Speeding up processes and improving customer access to services is a key part of making our council as open and helpful as possible to the residents we serve.

“We know that many of our residents want to be able to manage their accounts at the touch of a button and at a time that suits them and this online account will make it easier for residents to do this, as well as let us know if anything has changed.

“By making our services and processes more efficient through new technology, we can maintain high quality front line services and keep council tax low. Residents will still be able to call our customer contact centre but this online option allows people to access their information whenever they want to.”

The new online account comes after the council signed the government’s Local Digital Declaration in September 2018. This marks a commitment to working with other local public organisations to design services that best meet the needs of residents, protect residents’ privacy and security and deliver better value for money.
