Mayor’s carol service raises the roof - and vital funds for his charities
The family-friendly seasonal event, held at St Josephs Catholic Church in South Ham on Sunday 9 December, was packed with local people of all ages who were welcomed by the Mayor Cllr Seán Keating and Mayoress Mrs Gwen Keating.
More than £1,000 was generously donated to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2018/19, which is raising money for three local charities - Basingstoke Mencap, Naomi House & Jacksplace and Basingstoke NeighbourCare.
Musical performances of popular Christmas tunes were given by the Heritage Orchestra, the Belles of St Martin’s Choir, Basingstoke Ladies Choir and St Anne’s Catholic Primary School Choir.
Representatives of local community groups gave readings and the Mayor’s Christmas message focused on community spirit and the importance of supporting those in need.
After the service, led by the Mayor’s Chaplain Father Chris Whelan, members of the congregation joined the Mayor and Mayoress for festive refreshments.
Cllr Keating said: “It was wonderful to see so many local residents at my carol service and I am thrilled at the fantastic amount of money they donated in support of my charity appeal – three very good causes which benefit the community.
“The Mayoress and I send our Christmas greetings to everybody in the borough and wish them a happy new year.”
