Mayor to lead borough tributes to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

News release 8396, published on 10 Jan 2019
The Holocaust and other acts of genocide will be remembered in Basingstoke at a wreath-laying ceremony to mark UK Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Seán Keating will lead the ceremony on Monday 28 January 2019 at 10am at the War Memorial. Alongside Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Chief Executive Mel Barrett, he will lay a wreath at the memorial on behalf of the borough.

A bugler will mark the observance of two minutes’ silence and the Mayor's chaplain Father Chris Whelan will say a few words. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been commemorated worldwide since 2000 on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, in 1945.

The Mayor, Cllr Keating, said: “I hope borough residents will join me to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition, during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides.

“It will also be an opportunity to honour the survivors and remember the lessons of their experiences.”
