Fire It Up for National Apprenticeship Week
A series of events run by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT), Basingstoke ITEC, Basingstoke Consortium, Queen Mary’s College and The Careers & Enterprise Company are taking place to give people the chance to find out more about opportunities in the borough.
The roadshow events will be held on:
- Thursday 7 March, Basingstoke ITEC from 3.30pm to 6.30pm
- Saturday 9 March, The Malls Shopping Centre from 9am to 5pm
- Monday 11 March, Basingstoke College of Technology from 4.30pm to 7pm.
Staff from the borough council's HR team will be on hand at The Malls on Saturday 9 March and at Basingstoke College of Technology on Monday 11 March.
They will be talking to visitors about what it’s like to be an apprentice within a local authority, the support and training you receive, the different job roles you can train for and what we look for in new recruits.
There are currently 12 apprentices working in 11 different teams across the council with the number of apprenticeships growing year on year.
Borough council Leader Cllr Clive Sanders said: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic way into work and there are a wealth of opportunities available locally in a range of sectors.
“For people who are wondering whether an apprenticeship could be the right fit for them, these events are the perfect way to find out more.”
The council’s Corporate Communications apprentice Amy Hawkins added: “I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anybody who likes a hands-on approach.
“Doing an apprenticeship lets you see first-hand how an organisation operates. You get to earn while you learn and it increases your confidence in the workplace.”
Lorraine Heath, Deputy Principal for Business at BCoT and head of the college’s apprenticeship team Aspiral Learning said: “There has never been a better time to become an apprentice, with thousands of opportunities available to all ages both locally and nationally.
“Our Apprenticeship Recruitment Fair is the perfect chance to come and meet employers who have apprenticeship vacancies. It’s one of largest events in the area and with more than 50 companies booked to attend including Fujitsu, American Express and Vitacress, we’re encouraging anyone interested in starting an apprenticeship to come along with their CV and be dressed to impress.”
