Basingstoke named as top tech town
Basingstoke is proving once more that it’s punching above its weight when it comes to the digital sector, being named as among the top UK locations for investment in growing technology companies.
The town has been named as the fourth best place for such investment, behind only London, Cambridge and Abingdon, with total deals worth £425 million between 2015 and 2018.
The league table was published as part a report by Tech Nation, the UK network for technology entrepreneurs.
It is based on the number of scale-up companies in each area and the value of investments made into these companies.
Scale-up companies are those which have at least 10 employees and which are growing, with employment or revenue growth of at least 20% for two years.
The Tech Nation report also identifies Basingstoke as level with Prague, Strasbourg and San Jose when it comes to cyber investment.
It follows on from the 2018 Tech Nation report that ranked the town as fourth for digital tech density, fifth for digital tech productivity and seventh for digital tech turnover in the UK.
Cabinet Member for Borough Development and Improvement at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cllr Rebecca Bean said: “This report proves yet again that Basingstoke is thriving when it comes to the digital sector.
“We’re in the top five UK locations for scale up tech investment, outperforming towns and cities many times our size across the globe.
“We have a vibrant and growing tech community, including our incubation hub for high-tech start-ups delivered through the SETsquared Partnership, which is truly something the town can be proud of. This is a great place to build and grow a tech company.”
