Canvassers out and about to complete electoral register
More than 86.12% (65,945 households) have provided responses to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's Electoral Registration Officer as part of the annual electoral registration canvass. Over 60% (39,439) of these responses has been online, over the phone or by text.
Those who are yet to respond to their Household Enquiry Form - just over 10,000 households - will now be visited by electoral canvassers over the next few weeks.
If canvassers are unable to get a response from any household, they will leave a ‘Sorry we missed you’ card which includes the household response website address and the council phone number.
It is important that all forms are returned to ensure that the electoral register is up to date, to identify anybody who is not registered and to delete those who have left the property. Residents must provide the information to the Electoral Registration Officer even if there are no changes to make.
With all of the borough council seats up for election, parish elections and the Police and Crime Commissioner elections on Thursday 7 May 2020, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure they will be able to vote. Being on the register is also important because credit agencies check the names and addresses of people applying for credit and is also used to detect and prevent crime.
Even those people who registered for the local council elections earlier in the year will still need to confirm that their details are correct for this revised version of the register which the Electoral Registration Officer will publish.
The council’s Electoral Registration Officer Melbourne Barrett said: “Thank you to everybody who has completed their household enquiry forms so far. We’ve had a great response from residents and this is the final push before the register is published. We will be visiting those homes where we’ve not received a response and asking the household to simply update or confirm their details on the register there and then.”
