Council gives green light to first electric vehicle charging hub in Hampshire

News release 9584, published on 19 Dec 2019
The first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Hampshire is set to go ahead next year with backing from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
Councillors approved £75,000 of development contribution funding for the hub which will be created at Feathers Yard Car Park in Basingstoke town centre.
The move is in line with the council’s Climate Emergency declaration, which commits to working towards making Basingstoke and Deane a carbon neutral borough by 2030, and part of its Transport Strategy.
As part of the council’s car park improvement programme, the Feathers Yard green hub will offer EV users a convenient and easy to locate space to charge their cars. Parking for plug-in vehicles using the Feathers Yard hub will be free until April 2020.
The project will relocate the current EV rapid charger from the Central Car Park to Feathers Yard and provide three additional dual fast chargers (six in total) which will give EV drivers a better choice of charger type and a dedicated car park for their use.
The rapid charger is capable of charging a standard electric vehicle from near empty to 80% capacity in just 40 minutes and the fast chargers can charge from empty to 100% in two to five hours, depending on car and battery capacity.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement Cllr Hayley Eachus said: “We are delighted to give the go-ahead to Hampshire’s first dedicated EV charging hub in Basingstoke town centre. This is a really positive step forward and supports both the council’s Climate Emergency declaration and its Transport Strategy priority towards achieving zero emissions in the borough.
“The Feathers Yard car park will provide a conveniently located space for EV users to recharge their vehicles and is an excellent solution to meet the increasing need for charging infrastructure.”
The council’s Climate Emergency pledges to deliver services to residents in a more environmentally-friendly way, targeting carbon neutral operations by December 2025. It also aims to work with partners, local businesses and residents towards a carbon neutral borough by 2030.
