More ways to recycle your festive firs

News release 9596, published on 24 Dec 2019
It’s now simpler and easier to recycle your real Christmas trees this festive season.

This year, for the first time, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council will be collecting real Christmas trees for those people signed up to the fortnightly garden waste collection service.

Garden waste customers can put their tree out alongside any bins or sacks at any collection after Christmas. Christmas trees must have all decorations and lights removed and trees over 6ft need to be cut in half.

Alternatively residents can drop off their real trees at 22 local sites, which will then be transformed into ProGrow soil conditioner for local gardens and wood chippings for the borough’s parks.

You can take your real Christmas trees to any one of the 22 locations below from Thursday 2 January until Sunday 26 January 2020:

• Basingstoke Town Centre, War Memorial Park (Crossborough Hill car park)
• Basingstoke, B & Q, Winchester Road
• Basingstoke, Homebase, Winchester Road
• Brighton Hill, Gershwin Road, Sports Pavilion
• Burghclere, Harts Lane, Sports club car park
• Eastrop, Eastrop Park (Boat House car park)
• Hatch Warren, Community Centre, Long Cross Lane
• Headley, Darling Buds of May, Newbury Road
• Kingsclere, Fieldgate Centre
• Lasham, Avenue Nurseries Garden Centre, The Avenue

Alternatively, you can take your tree to the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Wade Road anytime between 9am and 4pm.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement Cllr Hayley Eachus said: “We can all do our bit to have a greener Christmas this festive season and it is great news that recycling your real Christmas tree is simpler than ever before and will help gardens and our parks to bloom.”
