Government funding boost for infrastructure and cutting carbon at Manydown

A £200,000 Government funding boost has been announced to help ensure that the new homes proposed at Manydown will be well-designed and eco-friendly with the right infrastructure in place.
Announced this week (Tuesday 14 January) by Housing Minister Rt Hon Esther McVey MP, the funding is part of a £2.5 million allocation to help new locally-led garden towns and villages progress plans to deliver new homes in the South East.
The funding will contribute to specialist support to design ahead for the longer-term transport solutions, master planning and visioning for the new Garden Communities being planned at Manydown.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council, as the joint landowners of the 2,000 acres of land at Manydown, have made a long-term commitment to develop new homes in a well-designed and well-planned way.
Following both councils declaring a climate emergency, part of the funding will support work already going on to ensure new infrastructure and homes are designed to cut carbon and homes are smart technology-enabled.
An outline planning application for the northern part of Manydown has been submitted setting out the main principles for developing a thriving new community of up to 3,520 new homes, businesses, shops and community facilities, two new primary schools and land for a new secondary school, and a 250 acre country park.
A planning decision on this is expected this spring, following extensive work with the planning and highways authorities to respond to feedback during several stages of consultation on the application. This has focused on ensuring the development, and infrastructure to support it, can be delivered in a way that will work well for current and future communities.
The two local councils have chosen nationally-renowned master developer Urban&Civic, funded by The Wellcome Trust, to develop the northern part of Manydown in an innovative partnership that is committed to making it one of the best designed and thought out new housing developments in the UK.
The borough council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Property Cllr John Izett said: “This funding is further government support for our commitment as a council to deliver something outstanding for the people of the borough at Manydown – a high quality, well designed and well-built eco-friendly new community in a great living environment.”
Leader of Hampshire County Council Cllr Keith Mans said: “This additional funding is excellent news. It is a very welcome contribution to our plans to deliver a high quality community at Manydown. Our vision is to create a thriving new community that reflects Hampshire’s character, with contemporary sustainable design.”
