Join adventurer James for a fundraising voyage of discovery

News release 9617, published on 07 Feb 2020
Around-the-world adventurer James Ketchell will take his audience on a voyage of discovery at a special evening in aid of Basingstoke and Deane Mayor’s Charity Appeal.

Basingstoke-born James, a former pupil of the Costello School, successfully returned last year after flying over 37,000 kilometres around the world in his gyrocopter G-KTCH. The mission was to inspire a million young people around the world to pursue their own goals and dreams, whilst raising funds for two children’s charities.

The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Councillor Diane Taylor is inviting people to join her for An Evening with Adventurer James Ketchell at The Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke, on Friday 13 March at 7pm.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2019/20, supporting HeartSmart, Real Change not Loose Change and Besom in Basingstoke.

James’s inspirational journey took him across France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Alaska, Canada, the United States, Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands before returning to the UK.

In 2010, the serial adventurer known as ‘Captain Ketch’ rowed single-handed across the Atlantic Ocean, battling freak storms and running out of food. The crossing took a total of 110 days, four hours and four minutes.

In 2011, he reached the summit of Mount Everest but developed a lung infection on his descent.

Then in 2012, James cycled 18,000 miles solo through 20 different countries and visiting schools around the world to inspire young people to pursue their dreams.

James is now a motivational speaker giving talks and has written a book about his experiences around the world ‘The Ultimate Triathlon’.

Cllr Taylor said: “It’s a great opportunity for people to meet James, hear his incredible travel stories and ask him any questions. He has a fascinating background with many hair-raising adventures, such as being rescued from the Indian Ocean.

“I am delighted that James has kindly agreed to take part in this fundraising evening for my charities. My thanks to him and to the team at The Apollo for their support.”

James added: “I am extremely excited to be speaking in my home town, sharing stories of fun and adventure, and supporting the Mayor’s charities. It's going to be a great event”

A raffle will also be held, along with an amazing opportunity to bid for a flight with James in his gyrocopter.
