A taste of India on the menu at Mayor’s Charity Lunch

News release 9618, published on 07 Feb 2020
Sitar music, sari demonstrations and delicious food will be on the menu at an Indian-themed Mayoral Charity Lunch on Thursday 19 March.

Basingstoke and Deane Mayor Cllr Diane Taylor is inviting members of the public to join her for a tasty three-course Indian buffet at The Restaurant, Basingstoke College of Technology.

Catering students will be cooking and serving the lunch and a drink will be served on arrival with tea or coffee afterwards.

Guests will be treated to music performed by a Sitar player throughout lunch and there will be demonstrations of traditional Indian costumes. There will also be a raffle.

A donation from the event will go to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2019/20, supporting HeartSmart, Real Change not Loose Change and Besom in Basingstoke.

Cllr Taylor said: “Andy and I have been visiting India regularly for over 30 years and have many friends there. We love the people, the culture and the food.

"In the early days we would sit on the ground eating with our fingers off plates made from banana leaves. People who come to the Mayor’s Indian lunch will be properly seated and given knives and forks.

"We look forward to demonstrating Indian clothing, enjoying background music from a sitar player as we eat, and sharing a few of our experiences.

"I hope to welcome many local people to the fundraising event which will give a real boost to my charity appeal.”

Tickets are priced £25 (excludes booking fee) and are available by completing the online booking form

Closing date for applications is Tuesday 10 March 2020.
