Mayor calls on community to ‘stand together’ at first virtual public meeting

News release 9706, published on 27 May 2020
‘Standing Together as a single community during COVID-19’ was the focus of a speech given by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane during her first virtual public meeting.
In line with current government guidance, the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are now available to join virtual meetings and events.
Mayor Cllr Diane Taylor and Deputy Mayor Cllr Onnalee Cubitt were guests and speakers at an online Ramadan meeting organised and hosted by the Basingstoke branch of the Dialogue Society and the Fellowship Educational Society on Tuesday 19 May.
The meeting, which was shown on YouTube, also featured discussions with local representatives from various faith organisations, including the Bishop of Basingstoke The Right Reverend David Williams and speakers from the Basingstoke Al Birr Mosque, Basingstoke Hindu Society, and Basingstoke Multicultural  Forum, among others.
There were also musical performances and a demonstration of Ebru, paper marbling art.
Cllr Taylor said: “I was honoured to take part in this celebration of Ramadan with local faith representatives.
“We enjoyed a lively and thought-provoking meeting where we gave our different perspectives on how life has been affected by the current coronavirus pandemic. But we all agreed on one thing – the importance of supporting everybody in our local communities and standing together to spread positivity and look towards better times.
“It was my first virtual public meeting and I hope to be invited to more community events that are taking place online. It is so important to stay connected and informed about what is happening and how we can lend a hand if needed.
“We may not be meeting physically at present, but I would love to join virtual events and meetings taking place around the borough. Please contact me via the Mayor’s webpage to request my attendance and I will be delighted to take part if I’m available.”
If you would like to invite the Mayor to join a virtual event, please visit and complete the online request form, giving as much information about your organisation and the event as possible at least 10 days before it takes place.
