Basingstoke Variety Show cancelled
The popular annual show attracts the best performing talent in the borough and has raised thousands of pounds for local causes since 2000. But due to uncertainty as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing government advice regarding social distancing measures, this year’s event at The Anvil on 3 October will not go ahead.
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Diane Taylor said the decision to cancel the show was very disappointing but clearly necessary with the threat of a second wave of coronavirus.
Cllr Taylor, who is serving a second year as Mayor, was hoping that her chosen charities, Sebastian’s Action Trust and St John Ambulance, would receive a huge boost from the show’s proceeds. However, she welcomes any donations to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2020/21, which can be made online at https://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/donatemayorcharity
She said: “It was a difficult decision to cancel the Basingstoke Variety Show 2020, which would have been the 20th year of the show.
“I’m sure the performers are as disappointed as myself and the organisers, but we will all look forward to welcoming everyone to The Anvil next year for Basingstoke and Deane’s community show, hopefully to be held on Saturday 2 October 2021. This will be a great opportunity to showcase the borough’s talented dancers, singers, musicians and entertainers.”
