Show your support for local businesses following launch of new online marketplace

News release 9833, published on 20 Nov 2020
Small and independent businesses in Basingstoke and Deane and the surrounding villages can now sell their products to residents across the borough and further afield, following the launch of a new online marketplace.

The exciting e-commerce platform, The Borough Basket, has been set up to help local businesses take the leap in selling their goods online and provides a single website for residents to buy products from their favourite shops and restaurants.

With more people turning to online shopping during the latest national COVID-19 restrictions and with Christmas just around the corner, it is the perfect time for you to support local businesses during this difficult time.

So far, over 50 local businesses have registered interest in the platform, including G.Dowling & Son Shop of shoes in Whitchurch, Basing View-based fashion brand Dishonor London, local artist Zoe Squires and a range of small independent businesses such as Slice of Fun Cakes, Dovecote Furnishings, The Right Kit and Overton’s Bloom Arts and Crafts. And there is still time for businesses to get involved.

To support businesses signing up to the scheme, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council will reimburse participating businesses with any sales commission charged by the online payment solution provider, up to the first £500.

Leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cllr Ken Rhatigan said: “The launch of The Borough Basket for the local independent businesses that we all know and love is very timely and I am pleased that over 50 businesses have registered their interest.

“Not only will it provide an opportunity for all those smaller local shops, who have had to close during the latest national restrictions, to sell their products online but it will also give our residents a convenient way to support our businesses and finish their Christmas shopping early.

“I am pleased that we have been able to work with our partners to launch this new marketplace at such a crucial time for our borough’s businesses. I would encourage more businesses to sign up and ask residents to support the local economy by shopping on The Borough Basket.”

The Borough Basket has been set up by the council and partners through the Love Basingstoke group, in partnership with The Designlab and IncuHive.

The Love Basingstoke group comprises Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Basingstoke Together BID, Destination Basingstoke, The Malls, Festival Place, Basing View, Anvil Arts, BDT and London Clancy property agents.
