Statement on the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore

News release 9879, published on 03 Feb 2021
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr Diane Taylor and Leader of the Council Cllr Ken Rhatigan have led tributes on behalf of the borough to Captain Sir Tom Moore, following the announcement of his death yesterday.

Cllr Taylor paid tribute to him saying: “Captain Sir Tom Moore has been a role model to us all – young and old. He has shown us that we can all find ways to make a difference and be a force for good, whatever our age or circumstance. Rest in peace, Sir Tom – you raised our spirits, helped our NHS and gave us all hope through these dark times.”

Leader of the Council, Cllr Ken Rhatigan added: “We are all deeply saddened to hear the news that Captain Sir Tom Moore has passed away. This extraordinary man represented the very essence of courage, determination and humanity at a time when our country needed just that.

"His legacy will live on through the work of our NHS workers, who have shown exactly the same attributes, while fighting COVID-19 in our hospitals.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Sir Tom’s loved ones. May he rest in peace.”

The Union flag at the civic offices is flying at half-mast today (Wednesday 3 February), as a mark of respect.
