Sports awards

In light of Covid-19 and due to the lack of sport taking place during 2020 and 2021, the annual Sports Awards event was cancelled in 2021. Information regarding future events in 2022 will be confirmed by Basingstoke Sports Council when known.

Our borough is fortunate to have a very strong sporting community, which is often demonstrated in competition. The borough council, Basingstoke Sports Council, Basingstoke Sports Trust, Basingstoke Community Leisure Trust, Destination Basingstoke, Breeze FM and various local sponsors all play a big part in recognising and support this at the annual Sports Awards.

The annual Sports Awards are coordinated by Basingstoke Sports Council and hosted by the Apollo Hotel. The awards ceremony celebrates the achievements of clubs, teams, coaches, officials and individuals involved in sport locally. Full details of these awards and previous winners are available on the Basingstoke Sports Council website.

The borough council allocates funds for grant aid for the support and development of local sportsmen and women. The Basingstoke Sports Trust (Sports Centre) and Community Leisure Trust (Aquadrome and Tadley Pool) also award scholarships to a selection of top athletes, which provide them with free access to a personal trainer at their respective facilities.

Unfortunately as a result of the cancellation of many sports activities following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sports Grant Aid scheme and Scholarships Scheme has been postponed. It is hoped the schemes will re-open for the 2021/22 sporting season and this will review this in line with the latest government guidance around sports facilities and activities.

Award categories

Club of the year

Each year clubs from within Basingstoke and Deane are encouraged to put themselves in the running for the prestigious Club of the Year award by submitting details of their achievements over the last year. The award recognises clubs who have demonstrated excellence in the management and development of the club, in addition to their results in competition.

The Club of the Year Award encourages clubs to think about how their club can continue to improve the service to its members in the future. The Health and Wellbeing Team and Basingstoke Sports Council are committed to helping clubs develop, and information and advice surrounding club development can be found on both our sports development webpage and Basingstoke Sports Council website . Alternatively more information can be found at Sport England website or on your sports own National Governing Body website.

The winner of the Club of the Year award will receive a cheque for £250.

Sports Coach of the Year

This award recognises the efforts of those that we rely on to provide sport in our local community. If you know a coach whose enthusiasm, involvement and success throughout the year has been exceptional then please take the time to nominate them in this category. Nominations are welcome whether you’re an athlete who would like to give something back to a coach that has gone the extra mile to help you, or a committee member who would like to recognise the commitment of the coaches in your club. This award is split in to two categories:

  • Voluntary Coach of the Year.
  • Professional Coach of the Year.

The overall winner of this award will receive a cheque for £100.

Team of the Year

This award is divided in to the two categories of junior (U18) and senior team. Nominations are welcomed from any team based in the borough. It can include school or college teams, a league representative side or a club that has performed particularly well throughout the year.

Service to Sport

Do you have people within your league, club or sports organisation who work exceptionally hard to ensure the club and sport is successful each year? The service to sport award recognises the achievements of those people who have involved themselves in local sports clubs on a longstanding basis.

Official of the Year

Sports officials in Basingstoke and Deane contribute countless hours to ensure sports competitions run successfully and fairly. This is your chance to nominate both your junior (U18) and senior official of the year.

Sports Volunteer of the Year

Recognition is also given to the important volunteers in local sport at both junior (U18) and senior level. This award is open to all those who volunteer their time to local sport. This could include anyone from committee members, grounds men or juniors on sports leader’s schemes.

Disabled Sportsperson of the Year

More and more people with disabilities are now taking part in a wide range of sports, with many also competing in mainstream competitions. Juniors, seniors and veterans can be nominated for this award.

Junior/Senior Sportsman and Woman of the Year

All applicants for Grant Aid are automatically considered for the Junior, Senior and Disabled Sportsperson of the year categories at both the Basingstoke and County Sports Awards. Please note that athletes aged 25 and over and others who do not fulfil the grant aid criteria are still welcome to be nominated for the sports awards and can do so by completing section A of the relevant form.

More information on the Sports Grant Aid and Scholarships scheme can be found on our sports funding webpage.

Veteran Sportsman and Woman of the Year

These awards recognise people competing as veterans or masters who are still excelling in their sport. The awards are open to both male and females competing in sport at county level equivalent and above.

Primary and Secondary School of the Year

This award recognises those schools which excel at providing good sports provision for their pupils. Nominations can be made referencing curriculum development, PE results, out of school hours provision, leadership and volunteering, health and fitness, club links, inclusion and success of sports teams.

All nominations for the above awards should be made on the official nomination forms which will be available at the foot of this page when nominations are open. (Please note that local sports clubs must be affiliated to Basingstoke Voluntary Sports Council in nominating in any sports award category. Affiliation is not needed by a club to nominate individuals for Sports Grant Aid).
