Go for weekly food waste collections

Weekly food waste collections have started in Basingstoke and Deane and Hart helping to boost the amount you recycle and reducing how much you waste.

Thank you for separating out your food waste to create greener energy and fertiliser. If you haven't used the weekly food waste collection service yet, you can start filling your lined indoor silver food waste caddy any time.

Follow the simple steps listed below and put out your large green caddy on your usual bin collection day by 6am with your other containers. For those of you using communal bins please use the shared food waste bins.

Four steps to food waste recycling success

Follow these four simple steps to food waste recycling success:

Step 1 - Let's go! Line your caddy

We have provided liners to get you started. All food waste must be contained in liners.

Top tip: once your free liners have run out you can reuse things such as bread bags or buy any type of caddy liners from the supermarket.

Step 2 - Fill as you go

We are here for all your meal prep moments and your unloved leftovers. Empty your silver inside caddy as frequently as you wish. Tie up your liner and pop it into your outside caddy or shared food waste bin.

Top tip: to reduce the risk of liners breaking don't overfill them and let your food waste cool before putting it into the caddy. Really mushy food may need to be double bagged.

What to do with food and drink packaging

Recycling

Put your pots, tubs, trays and similar packaging in your waste bin as normal. Put all clean plastic bottles, tins, cans, paper and cardboard in your green recycling bin.

How to dispose of liquids

Food waste milk

Milk, cream, gravy or other liquids listed - please pour this down the sink.

Hot or cold drinks - please pour this down the sink.

Oil - put in a container and put in your waste bin.

Meat fat - wait for this to cool down and become solid then scrape into your food waste caddy.

Step 3 - Out we go

Tie up your liner and pop it in your green outdoor caddy or shared food waste bin if you have communal bins.

Top tip: Store your green outdoor caddy in the shade if you can with the handle in the upright position. This will prevent smells and lock the lid of your caddy.

Step 4 - Bin day!

Food waste being collected

Put your large green outdoor caddy at the kerbside each week on the same day as your waste or recycling containers, unless we have told you otherwise. Please make sure it can be clearly seen by our crews.

Food waste is collected by a separate vehicle so your various containers may be picked up at different times throughout the day.

Top tip: write your house number or name on your outside caddy so our crews know which home it belongs to.
