Cllr Dan Putty elected as Mayor for second term
Cllr Dan Putty is the new Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane following a Mayor Making ceremony at the Civic Offices last night (Thursday 9 May).
Cllr Putty has served as a borough councillor for the Hatch Warren and Beggarwood ward since 1995. He will represent the borough at events during the year supported by the Mayoress, Marie-Noelle, known as Mano.
Cllr Putty previously served as Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane in 2013 to 2014.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the creation of Basingstoke District Council under the Local Government Act 1972. The council was renamed Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council after receiving borough status in 1978.
The Mayor has announced that his theme for the year will be community cohesion.
Cllr Putty said: “I am honoured to be elected as the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane for a second term.
“I aim to use my Mayoral year to promote community cohesion, working together so the borough is a happy and united place to live and work.”
Cllr Putty was born in Mauritius and stayed on the island with his family throughout his primary, secondary and tertiary education. After gaining some experience in financial management and leaving school he decided to travel to England to study nursing.
He arrived in the United Kingdom in 1970 and studied nursing in Basingstoke, qualifying as a mental health nurse. Following this he settled in the borough and is the proud father of two sons Ryan and Sean and has six grandchildren.
Alongside a demanding career in nursing, Dan managed to support his local community by working as a volunteer driver for Hampshire social services. He also served as a school governor in local primary and secondary schools and helped at Basingstoke Athletic Club – a club both of his sons competed for.
Dan gave up work as a nurse after sustaining an injury. He then chose to return to the financial services sector and took on roles at Allied Dunbar and Scottish Amicable as a financial management consultant.
Cllr Putty has also launched his charity appeal for 2024 to 2025 supporting North Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation, two charities that are very close to his heart.
The North Hampshire Prostate Cancer Support Group supported Cllr Putty during his prostate cancer diagnosis. The group gives men and their families the opportunity to share their experiences of prostate cancer diagnosis, treatment and its side-effects in a safe and confidential environment.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation is an independent charitable foundation, of which he is a former trustee. The foundation is the largest grant maker to specialise in awarding grants across Hampshire.
The Deputy Mayor for Basingstoke and Deane during 2024 to 2025 is Cllr Colin Phillimore.
