Explore wildlife up close at this year’s BioBlitz in Beggarwood Park
Residents are being invited to roll up their sleeves and discover the wildlife on their doorstep when BioBlitz comes to Beggarwood Park next month.
A BioBlitz is a hands-on event where people work alongside nature experts to find and record as many species as possible in one place, helping to build a picture of local biodiversity.
This year’s event, hosted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Natural Basingstoke, will be held at Beggarwood Park on Saturday 1 August, bringing together visitors, ecologists and local wildlife groups for a day of discovery.
Running from 11am to 3pm, the event will focus on interactive species surveys, giving visitors the chance to help spot and record a wide range of plants and animals.
Activities will include searching for butterflies, identifying wildflowers and exploring the hidden world of insects, moths and reptiles.
Participants at all the events will be guided by experts, including from the council’s Ranger team, Natural Basingstoke, local nature groups and organisations like the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
People who join in with the BioBlitz will learn more about local wildlife and contribute to a real-time snapshot of nature in the borough, helping to build a clearer picture of how native species are faring.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate and Ecological Emergency Cllr Chris Tomblin said: “BioBlitz is all about bringing people closer to nature and showing just how much wildlife can be found in our local green spaces.
“It is a great way to spend time outdoors, learn something new and play a part in supporting conservation efforts across the borough.”
Chair of Natural Basingstoke Gill Smallman said: “This event is a brilliant opportunity for people to get involved in nature in a practical way.
“Whether you come along for just an hour or stay for the whole event, you will be helping us better understand and protect the wildlife that makes this area so special.”
The BioBlitz supports the council’s ongoing work to help more people connect with nature, in line with its biodiversity strategy.
