A wall used for ball games in Basingstoke has been transformed with vibrant new pieces of public art.

The mural, commissioned by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and created by students at Queen Mary’s College, now brightens the popular kickabout wall in King George V Park, off Deep Lane. 

Striking designs by Logan King and Matilda Barton were painted onto the wall in June, after their artwork came out on top in a public vote earlier this year from entries submitted by 12 students.

The wall can still be used for ball games and the winning designs have now been varnished to protect them for the long term.

The council’s Cabinet Member for Sports, Leisure and Culture Cllr Kerry Morrow said: "These talented artists from Queen Mary’s College have used their creativity and talent to transform this popular kickabout wall into a vibrant piece of community art.

“The finished wall looks fantastic and adds to the growing collection of street art that we have in Basingstoke. I am proud that this council continues to support and showcase the talented young people in our borough."

Teacher of Fine Art at Queen Mary’s College Laura Starke said: “Our students embraced this incredible opportunity to take part in a commissioned community mural for the council, developing designs to bring energy and vibrancy to the kickabout wall in Brookvale. This has been an exciting and truly authentic work experience for them — working as practicing artists, responding to a live client brief and understanding how their creativity can make a real impact beyond the classroom.

“I am immensely proud of the commitment, creativity and professionalism they have shown throughout the process — they worked exceptionally hard to bring their ideas to life.”
