After energy prices rose earlier this month, a new guide is highlighting how residents can act now to save hundreds of pounds every year and cut carbon with solar panels. 

Launched by Sustainable Basingstoke, the Your solar panel guide is part of a new drive to encourage more residents to install solar panels on their roofs by explaining likely costs, potential savings and how to get started. 

It is the latest initiative under Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s programme that supports people to take action that tackles climate change, nurtures nature and can save money. 

Solar panels can significantly reduce household electricity bills, typically by around £600 a year, with potential for even greater savings if energy prices go up again in the future. 

Any electricity that is generated but not used is fed into the electricity grid. Households can get paid for the energy they export through the government-backed Smart Export Guarantee. 

The guide explains that solar panels for a typical three-bedroom home cost around £6,000 and that installation is usually straightforward.  

It includes a link to a free online tool that gives residents an initial idea of how many solar panels they could install and how much money they could save. It also covers how to find a reputable installer.

The council’s Cabinet Member for Climate and Ecological Emergency Cllr Chris Tomblin said: “Solar panels are a great way to lower your electricity bills, potentially by hundreds of pounds every year, while also playing your part to support the environment. 

“This new guide from Sustainable Basingstoke is designed to help people understand the process, weigh up their options and take their next steps with confidence. 

“We know that installing solar panels is a big decision, so it is important that residents have access to clear, practical and impartial information. Whether someone is just starting to explore the idea or is ready to get quotes, this guide is there to help.”
