Borough to come together for Remembrance services
The borough will honour the dedication and sacrifices of the Armed Forces at two remembrance services, led by The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Jacky Tustain.
A Remembrance Sunday service and parade will take place on Sunday 8 November, with a shorter service on Wednesday 11 November to mark Armistice Day. Both services will begin at 11am at the War Memorial outside the Civic Offices in London Road, Basingstoke.
The Remembrance Sunday parade will be made up of veterans, serving personnel, civilian uniformed services, cadets, military associations and local schools, who will march from Market Place through the Top of the Town before arriving at the War Memorial shortly before 11am.
The service will begin with The Last Post and Exhortation, followed by a two-minute silence at 11am. Residents are advised that space around the War Memorial is limited and are encouraged to arrive in good time.
Wreaths will be laid by Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire Lady Louisa Portal MBE on behalf of HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, The Mayor and the Leader of the Council Cllr Paul Harvey. Representatives of the Armed Forces, veterans' organisations and other groups will also lay wreaths and members of the public will also be able to place their tributes following the service.
After the service, the Mayor and the Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire will take the salute as the parade marches through London Street before returning to Market Place. Temporary road closures will be in place around the Civic Offices during the morning to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. Traffic will also be halted in New Road during the two-minute silence at 11am.
The Armistice Day service on will follow on Wednesday 11 November when wreaths will be laid on behalf of the borough during a short service of remembrance, which will include prayers and a two-minute silence.
Residents wishing to pay their respects are also welcome to place poppy crosses beside the soldier silhouette outside the Goldings building, near the War Memorial, after the Remembrance Sunday service.
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr Jacky Tustain said: "Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day give us an important opportunity to come together as a community to honour the courage, sacrifice and dedication of all those who have served our country.
"As we gather in remembrance, we reflect not only on those who gave their lives in conflict but also on the service of veterans and serving personnel who continue to protect our freedoms. I am honoured to lead the borough in paying tribute to them and ensuring their legacy is never forgotten."
