Skills and training

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships provide young people and adults with the opportunity to earn while they learn in a real job and to gain a real qualification. Apprenticeships develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce and businesses that offer apprenticeships view them as beneficial to their long term development. Apprentices can be new or current employees so can be used to recruit and train new staff or to develop existing staff.

Apprenticeships are available to businesses of all sizes and in all sectors, can last from 12 months to 4 years and can provide training from GCSE up to degree level. They are linked to job roles or occupations so are relevant to your business needs.

From April 2017, all UK employers with an annual pay bill of over £3million will pay a levy of 0.5% of their paybill. They can re-claim this in the form of digital vouchers which can only be used to pay for training apprentices. Employers with an annual pay bill of less than £3million will also be able to access money from the levy to pay for training apprentices. For more information on how the levy will work and how to access funding to pay for apprenticeships please visit GOV.UK website.
