Basingstoke and Deane is a great place to live, work and visit. Being surrounded by beautiful streets, open spaces and countryside is a right for everyone. Good design is fundamental to making better places and improving the quality of people’s lives.

We know that good designs:
- responds to the context and character of an area
- has high standards of architecture and landscaping
- makes places that are well connected and easy to find your way around
- provides streets, pedestrian and cycle routes that are safe and accessible to all
- uses resources and energy efficiently contributing to a sustainable future.
Good design should be the aim of all involved in the development process
The council encourages developers and architects to pay close attention to the principles of good design when proposing new schemes in the borough.
New development should:
- be design-led
- have ambition and avoid the use of generic, mass-produced architecture
- have high quality detailing, construction and landscaping
- recognise that new homes should be built to last and have enough space to meet the requirements of modern life
- employ decision making which acknowledges the wider value of high quality design
Achievement of high design quality in the urban and rural areas of the borough
The Council will help to achieve high design quality in the urban and rural areas of the borough through:
- providing a framework of design policies through the Local Plan, Neighbourhood Plans and Supplementary Planning Documents
- engaging in pre-application discussions with developers on proposed schemes
- positively engaging on proposed developments of high quality
- encouraging community involvement in the planning, design and management of places
