Good design

Basingstoke and Deane is a great place to live, work and visit. Being surrounded by beautiful streets, open spaces and countryside is a right for everyone. Good design is fundamental to making better places and improving the quality of people’s lives.

Let’s create attractive homes and places of work and leisure that look great and work well – places that we can celebrate!

  • responds to the context and character of an area
  • has high standards of architecture and landscaping
  • makes places that are well connected and easy to find your way around
  • provides streets, pedestrian and cycle routes that are safe and accessible to all
  • uses resources and energy efficiently contributing to a sustainable future.

Good design should be the aim of all involved in the development process

The council encourages developers and architects to pay close attention to the principles of good design when proposing new schemes in the borough.

New development should:

  • be design-led
  • have ambition and avoid the use of generic, mass-produced architecture
  • have high quality detailing, construction and landscaping
  • recognise that new homes should be built to last and have enough space to meet the requirements of modern life
  • employ decision making which acknowledges the wider value of high quality design
