Basingstoke Green Week

Basingstoke Green Week is a yearly celebration of action across the borough to address climate change and protect nature.

It is organised by community groups and organisations, and the council helps to promote and coordinate events during the week.

This year, Basingstoke Green Week and the national Great Big Green Week will take place from Saturday 8 June to Sunday 16 June 2024.

People of all ages are invited to enjoy a range of events and activities throughout the week supported by the council. Take a look what’s going on.

Saturday 8 June

A jam-packed day of activities in Basingstoke town centre to kick off Green Week

Between 9am and 5pm

There’ll be a ‘green market’ in The Malls, where you’ll be able to talk to our Green Team about making your home more energy efficient to save money and cut carbon, find out about the plants and wildlife that make the borough their home, learn about renewable zero-emission energy and get inspired to take planet-friendly action.

Those wishing to get around greener can head out to Lower Wote Street to take a look at new electric cars.

And, live performance artists and speakers will be taking to a stage in Porchester Square, Festival Place just outside M&S from 10am to 4pm.

10.20am to 10.30am Sustainability and green skills courses for tradespeople by the Basingstoke College of Technology
10.35am to 11am Sea-TACular live performance by artist and storyteller Junk Jodie

Followed by a 15-minute craft activity near the stage from 11.05am to 11.20am
11.10am to 11.40am Performance poetry by students at Queen Mary’s College
11.45am to 12.05pm Test your nature knowledge with a biodiversity quiz by Natural Basingstoke
12.05pm to 12.35pm Sea-TACular live performance by artist and storyteller Junk Jodie
12.40pm to 1pm Live book reading by Kerry McIntosh, local author of children’s book Rory Green, Secret Agent to the Queen

1pm to 1.30pm Discover more about local sustainable businesses that have attained BCorp status
1.40pm to 2.05pm Sea-TACular live performance by artist and storyteller Junk Jodie
2.15pm to 3pm Discover how the power of gardening can improve wellbeing with the Beardy Gardener
3.05pm to 3.25pm Live book reading by Lucy Jones, local author of Losing Eden
3.30pm to 4pm Learn about renewable energy with a panel discussion, quiz and myth-busting session

Sunday 9 June

Free open day at Northdown Orchard

From 12 noon to 4.30pm at Northdown Orchard, South Litchfield, Basingstoke RG25 3BP

A chance to go on a free guided tour of Northdown Orchard, a small, 12-acre organic family farm that grows and harvests a wide range of salads, herbs and vegetables all year round in its fields and greenhouses. There’ll even be a children's vegetable hunt with plant prizes to take home.

Tuesday 11 June

People, Planet, Pint: Sustainability Meetup

From 6pm to 9pm at The Alchemy, 10 Winchester Street, Basingstoke RG21 7DZ

This free, relaxed and informal event is a chance for those interested in sustainability in all its forms to meet and have a chat over a drink.

Whether you’re a sustainability professional, small business owner, local council/government worker, student, consultant, looking to switch careers, or anything else besides, come down and meet others interested in sustainability.

Friday 14 June

Community garden open day

From 10am to 3pm behind Kempshott Village Hall, Pack Lane, Basingstoke RG22 5HN

Saturday 15 June

Nature crafts, critters and more with Natural Basingstoke

From 10am to 4pm in The Malls, Basingstoke town centre

Dive into the world of nature with Natural Basingstoke. Get involved in some hands-on fun making nature crafts or join the team as they uncover the secrets of tiny critters and plants by using microscopes to explore these mysteries. Come along and learn about all the conservation work happening in the borough and how you get stuck in.

Throughout the week

Free wood chips

Collections every day from 10am to 4pm at Stratton Park Car Park, Pack Lane, Basingstoke RG22 5HN. You will need to go into the car park with the height barrier that is by the scout hut.

Fill your bags or containers with free wood chips for your garden, while stocks last.

Get stuff fixed for free

Thinking about chucking a broken item away and buying a replacement?

Save yourself the money and the carbon and bring it to repair experts in the unit next to Apple in Festival Place, Basingstoke, from 10am to 2pm on Monday 10 through to Friday 14 June instead. They might be able to fix it for you for free.
