Ready to ride

Launching in summer 2026, our new Ready to Ride pilot project will offer free cycling training sessions to help residents feel more comfortable using a bike for everyday journeys.

There will be three main types of sessions:

  • Beginners’ training – ideal for those new to cycling
  • Confidence-building sessions – to help riders feel safer and more assured on the road
  • Guided cycle rides – supported group rides to build skills, knowledge and experience

All sessions will be led by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, specialists in community cycling support. All ages are welcome, though under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

To make taking part easier, bikes from the Community Furniture Project and cycling equipment will be made available if you don’t already have them.

The programme is funded by the government’s Active Travel Fund. Money was initially allocated to Hampshire County Council, which then awarded a portion to us following a successful funding bid.

First sessions in Popley

The first sessions will take place in Popley, Basingstoke this summer.

If you live in Popley then you can register your interest now by emailing our Green Team, ahead of the sign-up form for those initial sessions going live.

We plan to extend our Ready to Ride pilot programme to more areas later this year.
