Markets have been held in Basingstoke since the original market was established by Royal Charter in 1622.
The market is situated in Market Place at the Top of the Town and continues down Wote Street towards Festival Place. Find out the location of the market below:
General markets take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 9am and 4pm. Stalls currently include fruit and vegetables, meat, eggs, pies and chutney, bread, cakes, fresh fish, Thai, Korean and Japanese food, burgers, plants, ladieswear, menswear, pet food, smoking accessories and e-cigarettes, and mobile phone accessories.
The market was re-launched in April 2015 under the management of specialist market operator Hughmark. The Wednesday and Saturday markets are continuing to expand with new traders and a broader offer.
In addition to the traditional Wednesday and Saturday markets, there is an annual events programme at the Top of the Town which has been designed to bring vibrancy and colour to the area. This includes:
- Taste at the Top of the Town food festival in the summer
- Mexican Day of the Dead in October
- Christmas festivities
- Chinese New Year celebrations
- Basingstoke Festival takes place in June and July each year and the market area comes alive with buskers on occasional Saturdays
- Occasional French and Italian markets
- Ad hoc charity and one off events on non-market days
Visit the Top of the Town website for full details of what's on.
