County, Borough and Parish Council Elections

County and local borough elections and some areas will also have parish elections that are scheduled to be held on Thursday 7 May 2026.

Local borough and parish election

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council have 54 councillors. The borough is divided into 18 wards and each ward is represented by three councillors who are appointed for a term of four years. Every year for three consecutive years, one councillor in each ward will have completed their term of office and their seat will become vacant.

There will be one seat up for election in each borough ward with some areas will also have parish elections.

The Returning Officer at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is responsible for the administration of this election.

County council election

There are 10 county divisions covering Basingstoke and Deane. Each division is represented by one councillor who are appointed for a term of four years. The last County Council elections were held in 2021. The May 2025 election was postponed due to the County Council’s participation in the Government’s Devolution Priority Programme.

The County Returning Officer is responsible for the overall running of the election. The Local Returning Officer at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is responsible for handling the nomination process and the administration of the election in the Basingstoke & Deane area.

Ways to vote

You must be registered to vote in the election. The deadline to register is 11.59pm Monday 20 April 2026 to vote on Thursday 7 May 2026.

Registered electors can vote in one of three ways:

In a polling station

You can vote at your local polling station between 7am and 10pm on Thursday 7 May 2026. You will need to bring photographic ID with you to vote. Find out more information about Voter ID.

By post

You can apply to vote by post up until 5pm on Tuesday 21 April 2026. If you are already a postal voter or have applied to vote by post up until Wednesday 1 April 2026, your postal vote will be dispatched on Thursday 17 April 2026. If you have applied between Wednesday 1 April 2026 and up to the deadline of 5pm Tuesday 21 April 2026, your postal vote will be dispatched on Monday 27 April 2026.

Once you receive your postal ballot pack, please complete and return it immediately. You can post it using the provided envelopes or hand deliver it the Civic Offices or your polling station on polling day.

Important:
If you are voting by post and decide to hand your completed postal ballot pack in to the Civic Offices or your polling station, you must talk to an authorised member of staff and complete a Postal Vote Return Form. If you do not complete a Postal Vote Return Form, your vote will be rejected.

If you are returning your postal ballot pack by post, there is no change to the process. Post your postal ballot pack with enough time to arrive with us by 10pm on Thursday 7 May 2026.

By proxy

You can apply to vote by proxy up until 5pm Tuesday 28 April 2026. Your proxy will need to bring their photographic ID when voting on your behalf. Find out more information about Voter ID.
