Empty homes

We know that residential properties may become empty for several reasons. Whenever possible we try to work with the owner to bring the property back into use.

Empty properties can have the following issues:

  • increased Council Tax
  • no rent if the property is not tenanted
  • dilapidation whilst empty
  • increased risk of vandalism
  • the value of the property depreciates

How you can bring your empty property back into use

If you are an owner and wish to bring your property back into use, we have a private rent scheme which is a free, fast and flexible route to letting. Through our private rent scheme, you can manage your property and choose from tenants we nominate. There are no fees attached and you will receive free photographic inventories conducted by an independent company and free Assured Shorthold Tenancies (AST) drawn up.

You will benefit from a dedicated Landlord Liaison Officer, who will provide you with support and guidance. Further information about becoming a landlord through the council can be found on our Private rent - landlords webpage.
