Report a problem with a council-owned tree

We are responsible for managing an estimated 80,000 trees and 100 hectares of woodland.

This important resource makes a positive contribution to the borough’s natural environment, providing a habitat for wildlife and shaping our landscape.

Urgent tree work

If a tree or branch is blocking the public highway report this to Hampshire County Council by completing their online form:

Report vegetation issues

If it is an emergency situation which could cause injury or damage call 0300 555 1388.

Outside office hours, phone 101.

If you are reporting a council-owned tree which needs urgent attention call 01256 844844.

Non-urgent tree work

Basingstoke and Deane only carry out works on council owned land, if the tree is not owned by the council and you can’t find the owner, we recommend a Land Registry search.

If the tree is overhanging your garden, you may prune it back to the boundary line. However, you should contact us by emailing trees@basingstoke.gov.uk before doing so, as legal restrictions may apply. You are advised to use a suitably qualified/insured tree surgeon who will offer you advice on best practice/British Standards (BS3998).

For council owned tree work requests, please submit an enquiry below.

We initially advise submitting an enquiry to save the need for filling out/printing a Tree Work Application Form. A Tree officer will then visit within 28 days and potentially order works, advise against works if deemed inappropriate or provide a Tree Work Application Form, if necessary.

Nesting birds

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it a criminal offence to harm or destroy any wild bird, its nest or its eggs. Although there are no specific dates set by the legislation, the nesting season generally runs from March to the end of August. During this period, it is still permissible to carry out tree works, but careful checks must be made beforehand to ensure that there are no nests that might be damaged.

We take the protection of wildlife very seriously at all times of the year. If you see our contractors carrying out tree works between March and August, please be reassured that we are carrying out the necessary checks. Where we do find a nest and where the work isn't urgently required for public safety, the works are put on hold until any birds have fledged.
