Household waste recycling centre (or tip)
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday (23 March 2020), all HWRCs will now be closed due to the Coronavirus outbreak until further notice.
Often referred to as the 'tip' or the 'dump', the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) recycles more than 60% of the materials taken there. Each site is run by a private contractor, on behalf of Hampshire County Council (HCC).
Please see HCC's waste and recycling webpages for further information.
Hampshire residents will need to register their car for free by 1 April 2020
A successful registration is confirmed on screen immediately after the online registration form is completed. The confirmation screen shows a reference number which residents can note for their records.
Resident Permit Scheme for vans and trailers
Hampshire residents using a van, pick-up or a trailer 1.8m to 3.0m in length to dispose of household waste at Hampshire's HWRCs need a permit to dispose of waste. Please visit HCC's for further information and how to apply for a waste permit.
Opening hours and locations
Where possible, material taken to the HWRC will be re-used or recycled. This benefits the taxpayer by minimising the cost of disposal for the remaining unrecyclable rubbish. The HWRC in Basingstoke is on Wade Road. For details on finding the tip and opening times, please take a look at Household Waste Recycling Centre webpage.
Site staff are encouraged to recycle or reuse as much waste as possible. They are permitted to sell on any suitable objects, and are incentivised to do so to generate additional income.
The HWRCs tend to be busier at weekends, particularly during the summer. To avoid long queues, consider visiting during the week or making use of the longer opening hours in summer.
The HWRCs are open every day of the year, except 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Opening times are:
1 March to 31 March - 9am to 5pm
1 April to 30 September - 9am to 6pm
1 October to 28 February - 9am to 4pm
Please visit the Hampshire County Council (HCC) website to find your nearest HWRC in Hampshire. You can also find information on what type of material each site will accept.
